Let It Snow!

It might not be cold enough for real snow this month in Henderson, but that doesn’t mean Green Valley Library kids couldn’t enjoy a fun-filled Snow Day indoors with a little imagination! The Jan. 14 children’s program offered one snowy lineup of activities! First, a snow story by the computer’s “virtual fire” while kids enjoyed creamy hot cocoa and snowmen marshmallows. Then, two craft stations for chalk snow scene drawings and snow flake creations. The event ended with a variety of winter-themed games such as pin the carrot on the snowman, snowflake bean bag toss, and igloo/fort building with white cardboard bricks!

If you’re interested in future kids’ programming like this, stop by the Green Valley Children’s Library for our calendar or view events online at www.mypubliclibrary.com! And be sure to check back Feb. 1 to see our February children’s calendar right here on the Green Valley Library blog!

Bake with Me: Chocolate! brings little ones into the kitchen

A continuation of our popular Bake with Me program, Bake with Me: Chocolate! gave children ages 2-4 a unique opportunity to cook with their parents and learn to create an easy and delicious treat! Since chocolate is such a major part of the winter season, the Jan. 6 program featured a Chocolate Mug Cake recipe as well as stories and dancing while the cakes baked in the microwave. Try recreating the recipe at home with your little one!

Chocolate Mug Cake

Ingredients:

2 Tablespoons flour (whole wheat pastry flour recommended)
2 ½ Tablespoons white sugar
1 Tablespoon cocoa powder
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
Pinch of salt
1 ½ Tablespoons milk
1 ½ Tablespoons vegetable oil
1 ½ Tablespoons mini chocolate chips
Splish of vanilla (that’s half a splash!)
2 Tablespoons egg
1 extra Tablespoon mini chocolate chips

Step 1) In a microwave-safe mug, add flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder and salt. Mix well with a fork so that no flour sticks to the bottom of the mug.

Step 2) Pour in milk, oil, chocolate chips and splish of vanilla. Mix together, then add the egg and mix again. Add the extra Tablespoon of chocolate chips on top. Cover with a plate.

Step 3) Microwave for 1 minute. If not completely cooked, add an extra 30 seconds. Carefully remove mug from microwave. Let cool slightly and enjoy!

Be sure to come back in May for the next installment of the Bake with Me program…Pizza!
