October is Computer Learning Month!

October may almost be over, but don't forget about all of the computer resources now available at the Green Valley Library. In addition to our computer lab with over 25 terminals available to the public, we also offer a variety of computer classes for first-time users as well as for those looking to sharpen their tech skills. Reading for a Record!

Thank you to everyone who participated in youth services event, Read for the Record (http://www.readfortherecord.org/), sponsored by the Jumpstart organization, where children across the globe read Eric Carle's The Very Hungry Caterpillar on the same day, October 8, 2009, in order to break a world record for the largest shared reading experience.

This is our first year working with Jumpstart in helping to promote awareness for at-risk preschool children. The program addresses the importance of literacy, social, and emotional skills so that every child can enter school prepared to learn!

This year our library district helped set the world record with other cities across the country. HDPL read to a total of 117 participants!! Great Job and many thanks to all of our parents, teachers, librarians, and teen volunteers!

The Nobel Prize in Literature 2009

Joy of Liberace!

Michael and Karan Feder, local Henderson residents and the authors of Joy of Liberace: Retro Recipes from America's Kitschiest Kitchen, gave a fabulous presentation on Liberace and his love of cooking. Afterwards, we were entertained by a live piano performance by Rebecca Olschewski and enjoyed yummy cookies courtesy of Carluccio's Tivoli Gardens, which was originally owned by Liberace himself! Food, music and feather boas -- what a fun way to spend the afternoon!

One Book Henderson Goes Global!

I struck up a conversation with a pilot on a recent flight back from New York. During the course of the conversation, I learned that he was an avid runner, hiker, and cyclist. I told him about our latest One Book Henderson project and offered to send him a copy of Ultra Marathon Man. The deal was that he's to send me pictures of where he takes the book. Above is the first picture taken at Anchorage on Sept 29th. Bill's review of the book states:

"What an inspiring story. I have never before read a book that length in one sitting. Thank you so much for sending me the copy. I am setting hiking and biking goals for next year because of this great read. If you see Dean pass my thanks on to him. Photo taken on coastal trail in Anchorage, AK. Always a nice run or walk after a long flight."
